The Problem
Before we get into "Bringing the Future to the Present" lets take a minute to review the roots of some typical "gotchas" that can cause lost sleep and missed schedules.

Each of these conceptual "gotchas" are easily expanded to include disruption of our plans by external forces. Of course, truly comprehensive plans consider possible and likely disruptions. They avoid or mitigate risk by contingency or backup plans. But most organizations lack the tools to effectively implement this level of planning, often chalking planning mistakes up to "The best laid plans..."

Completing "Phase A" and finding other items are needed before work can progress
Ever buy a great toy for a child and find out, after it's opened, that it needs batteries that you don't have? Not only can the fun not "progress," but the effectiveness (again the fun) is severely diminished. How about products rolling off the production line without shipping boxes? Even assuming super human efforts are able to recover and customers are not left in a bind, the cost and energy expended on such "fire drills" is certainly wasteful and demoralizing.

Completing "Phase A" only to find it was a wasted effort
Ever bring ice cream to a picnic? Better bring bags of ice for the cooler or by the time your ready to have dessert, it'll be soup! Even if it was on close out sale and "on the way" to the picnic (read: highly efficient), "Phase A," buying the ice cream, was wasteful and ineffective. Remember those products rolling off the production line? How about if the shipping boxes, beautifully printed and acquired at a bargain are too small? Do you have enough room in your dumpster for the boxes and the morale of your people?

Implementing "Phase A" when all possible "Phase B's" are unacceptable or impossible
Think of making a wrong turn in a maze and you get the idea. No matter how attractive "turning left" might seem at the moment, don't do it if it isn't going to "get you to the cheese!"
