Reverse engineering of a CPLD can be accomplished from a design description, from an intermediate file, such as a netlist, or from a working part. Lacking any intermediate files, it is most schedule-efficient and cost-effective to reverse engineer the CPLD by obtaining a functional description of the logic, then recreating the CPLD from that description. Given only a working part, with few clues as to what the part does, reverse engineering is still possible, but requires meticulous and time consuming effort.
If the device is unusually full, i.e. having a high percentage of resource utilization, there may be additional challenges. See CPLD Design
